Why The Emperor carries Aries

The pairing is not about temperament in the pop-astrology sense. It is structural. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac - the point at which the year begins and undifferentiated potential takes a definite shape. The Emperor is the card of exactly that operation: form imposed on what was previously formless, boundaries drawn, a rule established.

Look at the RWS image and the argument is made in the furniture. The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams' heads - the ram being the sign's own animal - in a barren mountain landscape with a thin river running through it. Nothing grows there. That is deliberate: the card is about structure rather than fertility, which is what separates it from The Empress immediately before it.

Mars rules Aries, and the Emperor's armour under his robe is the usual point of contact. But the card is Mars organised rather than Mars raw - the raw version is The Tower, which carries Mars directly. Reading the two together is a good way to feel what the attribution is doing: the same force, once as a founded order and once as that order coming apart.

The difficult register

Reversed or badly placed, the Aries-Emperor register is rigidity mistaken for strength, and authority that has stopped listening because it once had to decide quickly.
