Why The Sun carries Sun

In astrology the Sun is identity: not what you do but who is doing it. The card is the deck's clearest image of that — a naked child on a white horse under an enormous sun, with no shadow and nothing hidden. Nakedness here is the point. The Sun card is what is left when concealment stops being necessary.

It is worth noticing where the card sits. The Sun follows The Moon, the card of fog and projection, and the sequence is deliberate: clarity is not the absence of the difficult passage but what comes after it. A sunflower-topped wall stands behind the child, and the flowers face the child rather than the sun — a small joke about what is actually being illuminated.

The Sun also rules Leo, whose card is Strength. Read the two together and the solar principle appears twice: Strength is the Sun as courage that need not be demonstrated, The Sun is the Sun as a self with nothing left to hide.

The difficult register

Reversed, the register is usually less about gloom than about a clarity that has become exposure — being seen entirely, without having chosen it.

The solar cards — The Sun and, through Leo, Strength — are the deck's two clearest statements that power need not be defended. The Sun-ruled decan pips tend to show up at moments of visibility: work recognised, a position held openly, something no longer being managed in private. A run of them usually means the situation has stopped being deniable, for better or worse.
