Full The Tower meaning →Why The Tower carries Mars
Mars governs force, conflict and the will to act. The Tower is force arriving without consent: a lightning strike knocking the crown off a tower, two figures falling. Of all the planetary attributions this is the least softened.
The detail that changes the reading is what is struck. The tower is built on rock, and the crown that comes off is not the roof — it is a crown, a false top, something added. The tradition is fairly consistent that what The Tower destroys was structurally unsound before the lightning arrived. Mars does not create the fault; it finds it.
Mars rules Aries, whose card is The Emperor, and traditionally Scorpio, whose card is Death. The three make a coherent family: The Emperor is Mars building, The Tower is Mars demolishing, Death is the threshold that follows.
The difficult register
Reversed, readings usually turn towards a collapse resisted or postponed — which the tradition treats as the more expensive option.

Reading the Mars cards as a family
Mars gives the deck its two most forceful trumps — The Emperor and The Tower — and the traditional Scorpio link brings Death alongside. The Mars-ruled decan pips are the deck's friction cards. Read them together and the question is almost always about where force is going: built into a structure, spent against an obstacle, or turned inward where it does the most damage.
The decans Mars governs
Under the Chaldean order, Mars rules 6 of the thirty-six decans. Each carries a Minor Arcana pip, so these are the cards that take a Mars colouring regardless of which sign they fall in — a useful cross-section when you are reading for timing.
