The Suit of Wands
Fourteen cards of Fire — will, drive and creative spark. Also called Batons, Staves, Clubs, Rods depending on the deck and the century.
What Wands govern
Wands are the suit of impulse before it becomes a thing. They cover ambition, creative energy, enterprise and the friction that comes with wanting something badly. When a spread runs heavy in Wands the question is rarely whether there is enough drive - it is whether that drive has anywhere useful to go.
The shadow of the suit
Fire burns fuel. The difficult Wands cards - the Five, the Seven, the Ten - are almost all about overreach: too many fronts open at once, energy defended rather than spent, a load carried past the point of usefulness.
The signs it carries
Wands correspond to the fire signs — Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The suit's Two through Ten map onto the decans of those three signs, which is how a wand card can be placed against a date as well as a theme.
Ace to Ten in Wands
The Ace is the idea that will not leave you alone. The Two and Three are planning and first expansion - the Three traditionally shows a figure watching ships already sent out. The Four is the suit's one uncomplicated celebration. From the Five the suit turns competitive: rivalry at the Five, defence of ground already won at the Seven, and by the Ten a bundle of responsibilities the figure took on voluntarily and can no longer see past. The Eight is the outlier - the fastest card in the deck, and the only Wand with nobody in it.
How this suit gets misread
Wands are routinely over-read as unambiguously positive because the suit is about energy and most of its imagery is upright and active. In practice the suit contains some of the deck's most exhausting cards. The Ten of Wands is not a card about achievement; it is a card about a load. The other frequent error is treating every Wands card as career - the suit is about drive wherever it shows up, which is often nowhere near a job.
Reading the court
The Wands court runs quick, warm and impatient. Page, Knight, Queen and King each take Fire and handle it differently — the Knight at full tilt, the Queen holding it, the King directing it outward.
