What Cups govern

Cups hold what moves through a person rather than what they do. Love, grief, intuition, memory, the quality of a bond. A Cups-heavy spread is usually asking about the emotional truth of a situation rather than its mechanics - and often about a feeling the querent already has and has not admitted.

The shadow of the suit

Water takes the shape of its container. The harder Cups cards deal with feeling that has gone stagnant or misdirected: the Five looking backwards, the Seven mistaking a wish for a plan, the Eight walking away from something that still works.

The signs it carries

Cups correspond to the water signs — Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The suit's Two through Ten map onto the decans of those three signs, which is how a cup card can be placed against a date as well as a theme.

Ace to Ten in Cups

The Ace is feeling offered before it has an object. The Two is the bond between two people and the Three the wider circle around it. The Four is boredom inside sufficiency - a hand offering a fifth cup to someone not looking. The Five is the suit's grief card, and the detail readers miss is that two cups are still standing behind the figure. The Six turns to memory, the Seven to fantasy, the Eight walks away, the Nine is satisfaction and the Ten is the version of it that includes other people.

How this suit gets misread

Cups get read as romance far more often than the tradition supports. Only the Two and arguably the Ten are specifically relational; the rest are about feeling of any kind, including feeling about work, grief, or oneself. The Five is also commonly misread as total loss when its whole composition argues the opposite - what remains is behind the figure, out of view but not gone.

Reading the court

The Cups court runs receptive, attuned and inward. Page, Knight, Queen and King each take Water and handle it differently — the Knight at full tilt, the Queen holding it, the King directing it outward.

The Cups decans

The Two through Ten of Cups map onto the nine decans of Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — each a ten-degree slice of the zodiac with its own planetary ruler, its own stretch of the calendar, and the Golden Dawn title the pip inherits from it.
