Two of Cups

Tarot Card Meaning & Interpretation

Two of Cups is part of the Cups suit in the Minor Arcana in the tarot deck. The Cups suit governs emotions, relationships, and intuition.

▲ Upright Meaning

Unified love, partnership, mutual attraction

The Two of Cups is the meeting of hearts - mutual love, partnership, and the union of two into a shared bond. Where the Ace is feeling at its source, the Two is feeling shared and answered: attraction recognised, affection returned, the alchemy of two people drawn into harmony. To draw it is to be shown a connection of equals - romantic, but also any deep mutual bond - in which each gives and each receives. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a man and woman face each other, each holding a cup, exchanging a pledge; above them rises the caduceus of Hermes entwined with serpents, crowned by a winged lion's head. The exchanged cups are the mutual giving of the heart; the caduceus is the healing, balancing power of union and the reconciliation of opposites; the lion-head is the warmth of passion blessing the bond. It is the Lovers' theme distilled into the suit of feeling - partnership as a meeting of equals. As a Two, it carries the numerology of pairing and reciprocity - the Ace's single source now mirrored, the one become two-in-relationship. The Marseille pip, read by number and element, speaks of water meeting water, emotion answered by emotion. Two is the number of partnership and balance; in the watery suit it becomes mutual love, the harmonious pairing of feeling, connection that flows both ways. The esoteric traditions title it Love - Venus in Cancer, the planet of love in the sign of the home and the heart, the most tender and nurturing of placements. Crowley's Thoth Two of Cups shows lotuses pouring water into linked cups, love freely flowing. Etteilla and the cartomancers read it as love, friendship, attraction, and the union of affections, sometimes the beginning of a relationship. The common thread is reciprocal love - the bond of two hearts in harmony. In a reading the Two of Cups counsels the honouring of mutual connection and the giving and receiving of love as equals. It favours romance, partnership, reconciliation, deep friendship, and the harmony of a bond freely shared; it often marks a meeting of true affinity. Its Venus-in-Cancer tenderness, watery and home-loving, resonates with the gentle building of the waxing moon and the lunar rhythms of intimacy. It reminds the querent that love is not given to be hoarded but to be exchanged, and that the deepest bonds are those in which both hearts pour freely.

▼ Reversed Meaning

Self-love, break-ups, disharmony, distrust

Reversed, the union falls out of balance. This may mark disharmony in a relationship - tension, miscommunication, a bond strained or breaking, affection no longer flowing both ways. It can signal a breakup, a falling-out, or the painful imbalance in which one gives far more than the other returns. The mirrored cups no longer reflect each other. The reversal can also point to a relationship with oneself out of harmony, a need to restore inner balance before a bond with another can be healthy, or tension that, if addressed honestly, can be repaired. The corrective is the upright card's reciprocity: restore the give-and-take, communicate the unspoken, and either rebalance the bond into genuine mutuality or recognise honestly when the exchange has stopped flowing.
