King of Wands
Tarot Card Meaning & Interpretation
King of Wands is part of the Wands suit in the Minor Arcana in the tarot deck. The Wands suit governs passion, creativity, and ambition.
▲ Upright Meaning
The King of Wands is the visionary master of fire - bold leadership, charisma, and the mature will that commands and inspires. He holds the suit's passion as directed power: the entrepreneur, the natural leader, the one who sees a vision and rallies others to build it. Where the Queen radiates warmth, the King projects authority and drive; he is fire that rules, ambition made wise by experience, the charismatic commander who leads from the front. To draw him is to meet fire crowned. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a king sits on a throne adorned with lions and salamanders (both fire emblems), holding a flowering wand, a small salamander at his feet with its tail nearly forming a closed circle - the symbol of fire's nearly-perfected mastery. His robe blazes with flame motifs; his posture is dynamic rather than static, as if ready to rise and act. He is a man of vision and command, passion governed by purpose. Across the traditions the rank carries an important correspondence. The Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands maps to the Thoth Knight of Wands (in Thoth the mounted Knight is the senior fire figure, not the King), and to the Tarot de Marseille Roi de Bâtons. In the Golden Dawn elemental scheme this rank is the fiery part of fire - the purest, most concentrated expression of the element, will at its most commanding and creative. He is fire ruling fire: the visionary whose drive is total. As a court card he can represent a person - a charismatic leader, an entrepreneur, a bold and visionary man, a mentor of great drive - or an energy: decisive leadership, the courage of conviction, the power to inspire others toward a goal. Etteilla and the cartomancers read the Roi de Bâtons as an honest, passionate, authoritative man, a good counsellor and leader. The common thread is mastered, visionary fire - leadership, charisma, and the will to make a vision real. In a reading the King of Wands counsels bold, visionary leadership and the confident pursuit of ambitious goals. It favours entrepreneurship, decisive command, the inspiring of others, and the long-range vision that sees what could be and builds toward it; it often marks a leader to follow or a leadership role to step into. Its fiery-fire nature is the suit at full power, resonating with the full moon's culmination of energy. It reminds the querent that true leadership is vision plus the will to enact it, and that the best leaders light fires in others rather than merely burning brightest themselves.
▼ Reversed Meaning
Reversed, the King's fire turns tyrannical or hollow. This may mark domineering leadership - the visionary become a tyrant, drive turned ruthless, command without compassion, a man who must always be in charge. Or it may mark impulsiveness at the top: rash decisions, ambition outrunning judgment, a leader who charges without counsel. The reversal can also point to a vision unrealised - grand plans that never materialise, leadership that is all bluster and no follow-through, or a charismatic man who cannot deliver what he promises. The corrective is the upright card's mastered vision: lead with conviction but listen, temper boldness with judgment, and remember that authority is held in trust to serve a vision, not merely to gratify the ego that holds it.
