Why The Star carries Aquarius

Aquarius is the water-bearer, and the RWS Star shows a naked woman pouring water from two vessels - one onto land, one back into a pool. The iconographic match is direct. Note that Aquarius is an air sign despite the water imagery; the water it carries is a gift being distributed, not an emotion being felt.

That distinction is the card. The Star follows The Tower, and its whole register is what becomes possible after a structure collapses: hope, but the impersonal kind - the sense that the future is open. Aquarius is the sign of the collective and the not-yet, which is the same register.

Uranus rules Aquarius in modern practice, and Uranus carries The Fool - the other great card of open possibility. Traditionally Saturn ruled Aquarius, which explains the fixed, structural quality underneath the card's optimism. The Star is not naive; it is the calm after something has already been survived.

The difficult register

The Aquarian shadow is hope kept at a distance - caring about humanity in general while staying unreachable to anyone in particular.

The three Aquarius decans and their cards

Aquarius spans thirty degrees, divided into three decans of ten. Each has its own planetary ruler under the Chaldean order and its own pip card from the Suit of Swords — which is how a Minor Arcana card can be placed against a stretch of the calendar.

The Aquarius court cards

Aquarius is air, so its court belongs to the Suit of Swords — sharp, articulate and detached.
