Why The High Priestess carries Moon

This is the correspondence that catches people out, and it is worth being careful about. The card named The Moon carries the sign Pisces. The luminary called the Moon carries The High Priestess. The two are related but they are answering different questions.

The High Priestess sits between two pillars with a crescent moon at her feet, a lunar crown, and a partly concealed scroll. Astrologically the Moon governs instinct, memory, and the inner life that is not on display — and the card is precisely that: knowledge held rather than spoken, a veil behind her patterned with pomegranates that you can see but not through.

The Moon also rules Cancer, whose card is The Chariot. Between them the lunar principle divides neatly: The High Priestess is the inner life kept, The Chariot is the inner life protected while moving.
