Why The Magician carries Mercury

Mercury governs language, exchange, cleverness and the movement of information — and the Magician is the deck's card of skilled agency. On his table lie a wand, a cup, a sword and a pentacle: all four suits, all four elements, laid out as tools. He is the figure who can operate any of them.

The gesture matters. One hand points up and one down, the standard as-above-so-below sign, which in this context means translation rather than magic: taking something from one level and rendering it on another. That is Mercury's actual function in a chart.

Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, whose cards are The Lovers and The Hermit. The three together give the planet's full range — The Magician as capability, The Lovers as Mercury relating outwards, The Hermit as Mercury refining inwards.
