Which tarot card is Virgo?
Virgo is attributed to The Hermit, the ninth Major Arcanum.
The Hermit
Upright: Soul-searching, introspection, being alone, inner guidance
Reversed: Isolation, loneliness, withdrawal, anti-social
Full The Hermit meaning →Why The Hermit carries Virgo
Virgo is mutable earth: discrimination, refinement, the removal of what is not needed. The Hermit is the card of deliberate withdrawal for the sake of clarity - not retreat, but the isolation required to see accurately.
The RWS Hermit stands on a summit holding a lamp with a six-pointed star inside it, which is the detail that carries the attribution. He is not lost. He has climbed somewhere specific and is holding up a small, precise light rather than illuminating everything at once. That selective, exacting quality of attention is Virgo's signature.
Mercury rules Virgo as well as Gemini, and comparing the two Mercury signs through their cards is instructive. Gemini's Lovers is Mercury outward - relating, comparing, communicating. Virgo's Hermit is Mercury inward - analysing, refining, discarding. Same planet, opposite direction.
The difficult register
The shadow is withdrawal that has stopped being useful, and the perfectionism that makes returning feel impossible because nothing is finished enough.
The three Virgo decans and their cards
Virgo spans thirty degrees, divided into three decans of ten. Each has its own planetary ruler under the Chaldean order and its own pip card from the Suit of Pentacles — which is how a Minor Arcana card can be placed against a stretch of the calendar.
| Decan | Degrees | Dates | Ruler | Card | Golden Dawn title |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo 1 | 0°-10° | Aug 23 - Sep 1 | Sun | Five of Pentacles | Lord of Material Trouble |
| Virgo 2 | 10°-20° | Sep 2 - Sep 11 | Venus | Six of Pentacles | Lord of Material Success |
| Virgo 3 | 20°-30° | Sep 12 - Sep 22 | Mercury | Seven of Pentacles | Lord of Success Unfulfilled |
The Virgo court cards
Virgo is earth, so its court belongs to the Suit of Pentacles — steady, practical and slow to move.
