Knight of Swords

Tarot Card Meaning & Interpretation

Knight of Swords is part of the Swords suit in the Minor Arcana in the tarot deck. The Swords suit governs thought, conflict, and truth.

▲ Upright Meaning

Ambitious, action-oriented, driven to succeed

The Knight of Swords is intellect in headlong action - ambition, drive, and the charge of a sharp mind toward its goal, fast, direct, and often heedless of obstacles. Where the Page watches and questions, the Knight charges: ideas turned into swift, forceful action, the warrior of the mind cutting straight toward what he wants. He is decisive, brave, and brilliantly direct; also impatient, blunt, and prone to charging without looking. To draw him is to meet thought at full gallop. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a knight in full armour charges at headlong speed on a galloping horse, sword thrust forward, leaning into a fierce wind that whips the trees and clouds behind him. The full charge is intellect and ambition in swift, forceful motion; the drawn sword is the mind committed to action; the fierce wind is the rush and turbulence of his own headlong pace. He is the most forceful and impatient of the suit's figures - all drive, all forward momentum, brooking no delay. Across the traditions the rank shifts. The Rider-Waite-Smith Knight corresponds to the Thoth Prince of Swords (the active prince of air) and to the Tarot de Marseille Cavalier d'Épées. In the Golden Dawn elemental scheme this rank is the airy part of air - the purest, swiftest, most concentrated expression of intellect in motion, thought charging into action. He is mind given speed and force: the brilliant, impatient charger, ideas turned to immediate deeds. As a court card he can represent a person - an ambitious, direct, quick-thinking individual, often forceful and impatient, brilliant but blunt - or an energy: decisive action, the swift pursuit of a goal, the courage to charge ahead and cut through obstacles. Etteilla and the cartomancers read the Cavalier d'Épées as the swift arrival or departure of a forceful person, conflict, or rapid change. The common thread is intellect in headlong action - drive, directness, and the charge toward a goal. In a reading the Knight of Swords counsels decisive, direct action in pursuit of a goal, tempered by awareness of his heedless shadow. It favours ambition, swift execution, clear and forceful communication, and the courage to charge at obstacles; it often marks a time to act boldly and directly. Its airy-air nature is the suit at its swiftest, resonating with the brisk mental drive of the waxing moon. It reminds the querent that decisiveness and directness can cut through what hesitation never could - while quietly warning that the one who charges without looking sometimes charges off a cliff.

▼ Reversed Meaning

Restless, unfocused, impulsive, burn-out

Reversed, the Knight's charge turns reckless or destructive. This may mark recklessness - acting without thought, charging into ill-considered action, impatience that backfires; or aggression and tactlessness, force used bluntly, words and deeds that cut without care. The headlong drive becomes a stampede with no direction. The reversal can also point to scattered, frustrated energy - drive with no clear target, burnout from constant haste - or to a person who is all force and no judgment, brilliant but destructive. The corrective is the upright card's drive made deliberate: keep the decisiveness and courage but add forethought and care, aim before charging, and let the swift mind serve a considered goal rather than merely racing for its own sake.
