Why Death carries Scorpio

The pairing is old and almost too neat, and it is worth stating what it does not mean. Scorpio is fixed water - the sign of what is buried, transformed, or refuses to stay hidden. Death is the card of irreversible transition. Neither is about dying.

The RWS card argues its own case carefully. The skeletal rider carries a banner with a white rose, a bishop stands to meet him, a child watches without fear, and a sun rises between two towers in the background. It is a procession, not a massacre. The card is about a threshold that only goes one way - which is precisely Scorpio's territory.

Modern astrology gives Scorpio to Pluto and traditional astrology gives it to Mars. The deck accommodates both: Pluto carries Judgement, another card of resurrection and irreversible summons, while Mars carries The Tower. Reading Death, Judgement and The Tower as a Scorpionic family is more useful than arguing about which rulership is correct.
