Why The Moon carries Pisces

Pisces is mutable water - dissolution, dream, the boundary between things going soft. The Moon is the deck's card of exactly that condition: a landscape where nothing can be seen clearly and nothing is quite what it seems.

The RWS image is unusually specific. A crayfish emerges from a pool onto a path running between a dog and a wolf, up between two towers and out of sight. The domesticated and wild animals are the same creature at different distances from consciousness; the crayfish is what surfaces from the unconscious and may crawl back. Pisces' own glyph is two fish swimming in opposite directions, which is the same idea.

Neptune rules Pisces in modern practice and carries The Hanged Man - suspension, surrender, seeing differently by giving up the usual position. Read The Moon and The Hanged Man together and you have the two Neptunian options: lost in the fog, or deliberately floating in it.

The difficult register

The shadow is taking the fog for a verdict - treating anxiety, projection or a vivid dream as information about the world rather than about the self.
