Why The World carries Saturn

Saturn is the planet of limit, time and structure, and the instinct is to expect a grim card. Instead Saturn gets the deck's card of completion — which is the most interesting argument in the whole correspondence system.

The reasoning is that a boundary is what allows a thing to be finished. Without limit there is no completion, only continuation. The World shows a dancing figure inside a laurel wreath, with the same four fixed-sign creatures that occupy the corners of the Wheel. The wreath is the Saturnian element: the enclosure that makes the dance a whole rather than an endless one.

Saturn rules Capricorn, whose card is The Devil, and traditionally Aquarius, whose card is The Star. The three are the same principle at three temperatures — limitation as trap, limitation as completion, and the open sky after a structure has fallen.

Reversed it is completion refused or unrecognised — a thing that is actually finished being held open because ending it would mean admitting it is over.

Saturn carries The World and, through Capricorn, The Devil — completion and constraint, the same principle at two temperatures. The Saturn-ruled decan pips are among the heaviest in the deck (the Three of Swords, the Ten of Wands, the Seven of Pentacles). Together they usually describe a limit that is real, and the spread's job is to establish whether it is the kind you work inside or the kind you have outgrown.

Under the Chaldean order, Saturn rules 5 of the thirty-six decans. Each carries a Minor Arcana pip, so these are the cards that take a Saturn colouring regardless of which sign they fall in — a useful cross-section when you are reading for timing.
