Four of Pentacles

Tarot Card Meaning & Interpretation

Four of Pentacles is part of the Pentacles suit in the Minor Arcana in the tarot deck. The Pentacles suit governs material matters, stability, and abundance.

▲ Upright Meaning

Saving money, security, conservatism, scarcity

The Four of Pentacles is the card of security and control - the holding-tight of resources, the saving and guarding of what one has, stability achieved and clutched. It is the conservative grip on wealth and possessions, the safety of accumulation, and the shadow of that safety: the fear of loss that can harden into miserliness and rigidity. To draw it is to be shown a relationship with security and control, and asked whether one's holding-on protects or imprisons. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a seated figure clutches one coin tightly to his chest, balances another on his crown, and pins two more beneath his feet, a town behind him - he holds all four pentacles, gripping every one. The clutched coin is the protective hold on wealth; the coin on the head and those underfoot show possessions held with the whole body, nothing let go; the rigid posture is security maintained at the cost of openness. He is safe - and closed, holding so tightly that nothing can flow in or out. As a Four, it carries the numerology of stability and structure - the square, the firm foundation, here the consolidation and guarding of material gains. The Marseille pip, read by number and element, speaks of earth made solid and fixed, resources held in stable order. Four is structure and security; in the earthy suit it becomes the holding-tight of wealth - stability achieved, and the temptation to grip it so hard that it cannot grow. The esoteric traditions title it Power - the Sun in Capricorn, the Sun's vitality in the ambitious, consolidating earth of Capricorn, worldly power secured and held. Crowley's Thoth Four of Disks shows a fortress of disks, security built into a stronghold. Etteilla and the cartomancers read it as the holding of possessions, security, sometimes avarice, and the consolidation of material position. The common thread is security and control - stability held, with the shadow of grasping never far away. In a reading the Four of Pentacles counsels the establishment of security while warning against the rigidity of grasping too tightly. It favours saving, financial stability, the protection of resources, and the consolidation of gains; it warns when holding-on has become fear, possessiveness, or an inability to let wealth circulate. Its Sun-in-Capricorn quality of secured power resonates with the settled, stable energy between the waxing phases. It reminds the querent that some security is wise and necessary - and that wealth held too tightly cannot grow, give, or bring joy, for a closed hand can neither receive nor bestow.

▼ Reversed Meaning

Over-spending, greed, self-protection, hoarding

Reversed, the grip loosens - for better or worse. At its healthier pole, the reversal marks generosity and release: opening the closed hand, letting wealth circulate, releasing the fear of loss, spending or giving where the upright card hoarded. The querent learns to hold resources lightly rather than clutching them. At its harder pole, the reversal can mark the loss of security - resources slipping away, financial instability - or, conversely, materialism and greed intensifying past all reason. The corrective is balance: hold enough for genuine security but open the hand enough to let wealth flow, give and receive freely, and root one's sense of safety in something deeper than the tightness of one's grip on possessions.
