Venus governs attraction, value and pleasure, and it carries The Empress. Its retrograde is much rarer than Mercury's — roughly every eighteen months — and the tradition reads it as a reassessment of what and whom you value.

What the period actually is
Venus stations retrograde for about six weeks every eighteen months or so, which makes it considerably less frequent than Mercury and correspondingly more noticed when it happens.
The traditional reading is about value rather than communication: relationships reconsidered, past attachments resurfacing, and a general reluctance to commit to anything aesthetic or financial that would be hard to reverse. The practical version is that it is a poor window for irreversible decisions about what something is worth to you — and a good one for working out whether the answer has changed.
In a reading, Venus retrograde tends to sharpen the cards about attachment and its cost. The Lovers becomes a question about whether the values still align. The Four of Cups asks whether the dissatisfaction is with the situation or with you.
Cards that change register
The Empress because Venus carries it, and Justice because Venus rules Libra. The Cups because the suit holds attachment. The Six of Cups in particular, because Venus retrograde is the classic period for someone from the past to reappear.
