What the period actually is

Three or four times a year Mercury appears to reverse direction against the background stars. It is an optical effect of two planets on different orbits, not a change in the planet's motion — worth stating plainly, because a great deal of writing about it implies otherwise.

What the tradition attaches to that appearance is a period for review rather than initiation: re-reading, re-negotiating, re-visiting. The useful version of the advice is narrow and practical — check what you send before sending it, expect scheduling to need confirming twice, and be slower to sign than you would otherwise be.

In tarot terms Mercury retrograde is not a set of cards that arrive; it is a lens that changes what certain cards are asking. The Eight of Wands, normally the fastest card in the deck, reads as a message that has not landed. The Two of Swords, normally a decision refused, reads as a decision that genuinely should wait.

Cards that change register

The Magician because Mercury carries it. The Swords because they are the suit of thought and language. The Eight of Wands because it is the card of things in transit. The Hanged Man because the period is structurally a pause.

Cards that sit badly

Cards demanding immediate commitment sit badly: the Aces, The Chariot, the Knight of Wands. None of them is a bad omen during the period — they are simply asking for something the moment does not favour.
