Justice is the principle of truth, fairness, and the inexorable law of cause and effect. It is the card of accountability - the recognition that actions have consequences, that the scales must balance, and that what we have set in motion will return to us measured against the truth of what we did. It governs legal matters and ethical reckonings, but its deeper subject is moral clarity: the willingness to see things as they are, to weigh them honestly, and to accept the verdict that follows. Its imagery is unmistakable and ancient. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a robed figure sits enthroned between two pillars, an upraised double-edged sword in one hand and a balanced scales in the other. The sword is reason and the cutting power of truth, double-edged because justice falls on all sides without favour; the scales weigh the facts impartially. Unlike the blindfolded Justice of the modern courthouse, this figure's eyes are open - she sees clearly, for true justice is not blind to the facts but only to bias. The card descends from the cardinal virtue of Justice, one of the four great virtues of classical and medieval thought, and from the goddesses of cosmic order - Greek Themis and Dike, Egyptian Ma'at, who weighed the heart of the dead against a feather of truth. Like Strength, Justice carries the famous numbering swap: in the Tarot de Marseille she is VIII and Strength is XI, but Waite and the Golden Dawn reversed them so Justice could align with Libra, the sign of the scales. Always check which order a deck follows. The traditions read her with a meaningful shift of register. Marseille's La Justice is juridical and moral - the law, the verdict, fairness, the rightness or wrongness of conduct. The Golden Dawn assigned her to Libra, the scales, sign of balance, harmony, and relationship, and Crowley renamed the card 'Adjustment,' moving it away from human courtroom judgment toward cosmic equilibrium - the universe's self-correcting balance, karma as natural law rather than divine sentence. The difference between RWS 'Justice' and Thoth 'Adjustment' is the difference between a verdict handed down and a balance perpetually restoring itself. In a reading Justice counsels honesty, fairness, and the acceptance of consequences. It favours clear-eyed assessment, the telling and facing of truth, decisions made on principle, and matters of law and contract. It asks the querent to take responsibility - to recognise their own part in how things have unfolded - and promises that the scales will balance whether or not anyone wills it. Its Libran, airy nature gives it a cool, deliberative clarity, and its theme of balance and reckoning resonates with the full moon, the point of culmination when what has been set in motion comes to light and is weighed.
