Traditional imagery shows a horned figure presiding over two chained humans — but look closely at those chains, and you'll notice they're loose enough to slip off. That's the entire teaching of this card right there: the things that restrict us often do so with our unconscious permission. This card isn't about evil or doom; it's about attachment, habit patterns, and the ways we give our power away to dependencies, relationships, or belief systems that no longer serve us. The Devil asks us to examine what we've become bound to, whether that's a literal addiction, an unhealthy relationship dynamic, a limiting self-concept, or even a comfortable routine that's preventing growth.
