Today we're working with the King of Cups reversed, a card that asks us to look honestly at our emotional maturity and how we're managing our inner world. In the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the King of Cups sits on a throne that floats on water—sometimes turbulent, sometimes calm—holding his cup steady while maintaining his composure. He's the figure in the tarot who has mastered emotional intelligence, who can feel deeply without being swept away. He belongs to the suit of Cups, which corresponds to the element of water and governs our emotional lives, relationships, intuition, and creative expression. As a King, he represents the most developed expression of these qualities: empathy, emotional stability, and the ability to hold space for others' feelings while maintaining healthy boundaries. When this card appears reversed, though, we're looking at what happens when that mastery falters. The reversed King might struggle with self-compassion, become moody or withdrawn, or—in shadow expressions—use emotional intelligence manipulatively rather than supportively.
